Kind is the New Classy: The Power of Living Graciously

Three rules my parents repeated were, “1. Be kind, 2. Be kind, 3. Be kind.” Kindness was constantly ingrained as a virtue to strive for in our home, and as a natural overachiever I took that pretty seriously.

One year, I sent every high school peer a handwritten Valentine to ensure no one was left out. One year, I taped Mother Teresa’s “They are all Jesus in disguise,” quote on my college dorm closet to remind me how to treat those I’d encounter. One year, I made a kindness bucket list for my kids to have concrete ideas to go to. Then after all the effort, I’d fail. Speak unkindly to those within my own walls, purposely avoid eye contact with someone in need, or gossip about a friend. It happens, and it’s going to keep happening on this side of heaven. Yet, therein comes the choice. The choice that this book I just read and film I just watched, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, present to us. The choice that the saints teach us, for “a saint is only a sinner who keeps trying.” The choice of kindness.

Remember the time a mom kindly glanced at you as you embarrassingly dragged the screaming toddler out of church? Remember the time a stranger let your kid-overflowing-cart ahead of you in the checkout line? Remember the time a friend comforted your pain and kindly listened to your troubles? Remember the kind comment on your politically heated social media post? Remember the smile that changed your day?

Today, let's remember. Let’s use our power to spread kindness right where we are. It's not always easy, it's not always instinctual, but "we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us." We can forgive ourselves for our unkind moments, and ask for the grace to try again. We can come one step closer to defeating the evil in our world & in our personal lives.

I put this book on hold at the library a few months ago, before the shutdown, and as I finally finished, I saw God's miraculously detailed timing. He wanted me to hear this message today, not months ago. He was waiting for this exact moment to share it with you. Be kind. Know the power of living graciously. Pray for world peace, and remember, “Peace begins with a smile.” A kind smile. 😊

In Joy,

Alex
