Godparent Tips!

What do you remember about your godmother? What godparent legacy do you want to leave?

With our baby boy’s due date TOMORROW (pray for us !) I’m thinking about who his godparents will be, and about my own godchildren…

I remember my godmother with such fondness. My Aunt Mary, an OB nurse who helped my young mother navigate new motherhood with me, her first child. My parents were living in D.C. as my dad was finishing law school, and my mom recalls, “Aunt Mary was like an angel. She’d come over, help me breastfeed, encourage my mothering. I don’t know what I’d do without her.”

I remember visiting her one weekend when I lost my first tooth. She pulled out a little box, saying after the tooth fairy gives you money, save this special box for your saint medals. I treasured that little white box more for years. My godmother tragically died young, but I pray to her often, thinking of her as I became a new nurse and mom myself, feeling her guidance through our Mama Mary.

Her small joyful things were everything.

Now, as a mom of FOUR BOYS, I have the great privilege of having FOUR GODDAUGHTERS! Amazing how the Lord provides! I dream of being that “fairy godmother,” to my girls, and then remember this great calling to stand witness as they children enter “birth into the new life in Christ,” foremost requires our consistent dedication to praying for them, helping forming their little souls for Christ.

Top godparent tips (that I’m still working on):

1. Write the day of their baptism on your calendar, and send them a prayer card, saint medal or call them on that baptism anniversary.

2. Print out a picture from their baptism somewhere in your house and say a special blessing over them when you see it.

3. Think of an annual Christmas gift theme you can add to each year. (religious ornament collection etc.)

Let me know what you would add! We got this!

In Joy,

Alex
