Worthy of Wearing

In honor of Nicole Caruso movement - YOU ARE WORTHY OF WEARING! Throwback to our vacation, in a dress I’d owned for years, found buried in my closet, squeezing my belly bump into. Dollar store sunglasses & lip gloss, $15 heels from Kohls, $8 straw hat from CVS. I felt like a million bucks.

Becoming a mother, I’ve struggled with that million-dollar feeling. Forget about it amidst the survival in early motherhood. Dismiss its importance within the walls of my home. Feel shame or confusion as a Christian woman. How do I know the limits of caring for such materialistic things? All is vanity?

Always aware of modesty and purity, always a lover of fashion. Childhood dress ups, working at Express clothing. To the adult desire for a stronger why behind my wardrobe.

I remember Jessica Rey’s YouTube talk “The Evolution of the Swimsuit,” that ended my bikini days. The Theology of the Body retreat that ended any shame of caring for my bodily temple. Books by modest fashion Christians like Leah Darrow & Candance Cameron Bure that ended doubts of its importance within mothering. The @col1972official conference that opened the possibilities of “a fashion brand that supports the value of life.” The mom blogger Stitchfix post that led to the joy in my first box.

Finally, the Instagram world that led to a movement that perfectly embodied an answer to the wardrobe why.

In a world of extremes, I’ve found caring for our clothes in a spiritually detached, yet, joyfully modern way is possible. We don’t have to be style experts; we don’t have to spend a fortune. We just have to constantly work at loving the bodies we’ve been given and give ourselves permission to love the clothes we cover them with.

It’s not about calling the sweatpants days a failure; but about recognizing how they might affect our discouragement and acknowledging the power to choose differently on others. It’s about showing our husbands and children we care, passing on that confidence to others, and allowing the joyful light of Christ to shine both inside and out.

Choosing joy in our clothing is a wonderful Christian thing to do. Thank you to those women showing us the way! #worthyofwearing
