On not using contraception postpartum...
“What will you be using for contraception?” Came the expected question at my post-partum check.
It’s been a long road, but my experience as a mother of four, Nurse Practitioner and Fertility Educator taught me the value of my response.
I remember the shock of this question 24 hours after giving birth to my first. A bit naïve, why would I think of preventing another life when I’d just given birth?
Curiosity drove me to discovering NaproTechnology and flying to Omaha, Nebraska with my second baby.
Why was every woman not aware of her natural design? How could so many women blindly accept a pill? Why was this not a part of our medical training?
My eyes opened to how the culture of death had trickled into our healthcare system, targeting the most powerful marker of health in a woman’s design, the power of our reproduction.
My enthusiasm drove me a little overboard by my third baby. Armed for action, I entered that OB’s office with basically a filing cabinet of pamphlets. The IUD poster should’ve tamed me, but that’s the fault of a sanguine.
By my fourth, it was the confident smile after “don’t forget to use condoms,” with “we’ve found our method successful without them. Have you ever heard of NaproTechnology? It’s helped a lot of women I know. I have this if you’d like to see more?”
Lesson:
That’s how cultural breakthroughs, like my friend @lilaroseofficial says, happen. Seeds planted one conversation, one post-partum visit, at a time!
In these unprecedented times, it’s tempting to diminish that role. Don’t. Being a mother, raising and caring for children, is the most pro-life thing we can do!
When we proudly #joanup right where we are, we show the world a true #newfeminist, as @managingyourfertility likes to call us!
Maybe our post-partum evangelization, our discussions with friends on the pill, our joyful mothering witness, can be our first battles won🙏
